Guanajuato has culture.

Since the 1960s, the city of Guanajuato has witnessed a growing tradition of callejoneadas, in which numbers of estudiantinas – student minstrel groups – stroll the streets and alleyways of the city in the evening and at night, playing music from the Spanish-American folk tradition and offering serenades.

A walk around the winding alleyways of the state capital is enjoyable not only from the point of view of its rich and interesting architecture, but also because it is worth learning about the legends behind them and other sites around the city, which have given many of them their names. Another must-see place in the city is the Museo de las Momias (Mummy Museum), which is world-renowned.

For Easter, which is celebrated all around the state with traditional processions, the Good Friday festivities are of particular note, since this day is dedicated to the Virgin of Dolores, the patron saint of miners who is represented by a lovely effigy.

The crafts of Guanajuato, which take on interesting forms in practically all corners of the state, have two distinguished branches. One is carved wooden objects from the village of Apaseo el Alto, where unique figures of spectacular beauty and originality are to be found, and the other is the pottery of Tarandacuao, which are high-temperature ceramics with a decorative style impossible to find anywhere else in the state, with colors, designs and shapes of a singular beauty.

Of particular interest for shoppers, the city of Leon is well-known for its traditional leather goods industry and for producing fine shoes.
