Corruption in Ecuador

Corruption has always been one of the great obstacles to the development of nations, which is why the United Nations, in 2003, saw the need for the creation of a Convention against corruption, which came into force since the year 2005

We hear corruption in Ecuador daily in the news, newspapers and conversations, almost normally. To the point that arguably many have become accustomed to the idea of ??the existence of corruption. However, we must understand the magnitude of this term, since its repercussions cause a great social impact and bring harmful consequences to society. Unfortunately, we can hear many people in the country who have already become accustomed to accepting various corruption practices normally and do not think that there can be a change, but simply resign themselves to it being present in all spheres of the country. Similarly, it has become very common to hear comments on acts of corruption that are committed on a daily basis. Citizens simply listen to the information or news without being aware of its consequences, we have forgotten the seriousness that this implies. Dr. Julio Cesar Trujillo, former president of the citizen participation council, stated that Ecuador would be in excellent condition thanks to all the resources it has if it were not for corruption. Words that I fully share, as we have elected leaders who have taken advantage of the country, profiting and leaving it in a terrible situation. On the other hand, it should be noted that the problem of corruption not only appears in the dignities or officials who occupy a position in the government or in the public sector but also in the citizens, because this "custom" has become part of our system, and we commit acts of corruption, without even thinking or becoming aware of what we are doing. Thus, for example, a person who is stopped by a traffic officer for an offense committed, many times before responding correctly to the error made, what some individuals do is offer money to the traffic officer to avoid the fine, falling so easy in a crime of concussion that, surely, it will never be brought to justice; and this is just one example of so many.

This year, an international commission arrived in the country to be able to give tools to the government entities in charge of fighting corruption, since Ecuador is in a scenario where its consequences are suffered, having serious political, legal, social and economic crises. For its part, in relation to the obligation of supervision that the National Assembly has, although several political trials have been carried out in the 2008-2018 period, many more are still missing, as there are political fugitives due to acts of corruption, and a number of people who have not yet been brought to justice. It is worrying how sometimes the people who are going to be prosecuted, due to their political power, make the agenda of a country adjust to them.

Corruption has destroyed the State of Rights in which we are supposed to live. There are many laws that are not applied, the processes that are established in the regulations are sometimes not taken into account. The judicial system has so many cases that they are slowly resolved for this very cause. Our most elementary rights are violated and their affectation is immeasurable. Therefore, as citizens, we have the duty and obligation to comply with the laws and ensure that every act of public power is supervised.
