MP calls for Remainers’ video probe

The elections watchdog has again been challenged by a former Cabinet minister to investigate Remain campaign spending during the 2016 referendum.

Brexit-backing Conservative MP Priti Patel said the issue was a test of the Electoral Commission's impartiality.

The watchdog has already refused a call to probe alleged collusion among groups supporting Remain.

Yesterday Ms Patel lodged a complaint over a video on its website and Facebook page with actress Keira Knightley urging people to vote.

Ms Patel urged the commission either to investigate or to "show equity" and end its probe into spending by the victorious Vote Leave campaign.

The commission's refusal to open an investigation earlier this year and its actions raised "serious questions about impartiality" and suspicions it has "decided to hold Leave campaigns to one standard, and Remain to another," she wrote
