Consequences of the Spanish Civil War

The first consequence of the Spanish Civil War was the very high number of human losses, usually estimated at more than half a million, which caused a drastic decline in the active population and had a very negative impact on the economic activity of the post-war period. Not the majority, but many of those deaths were due to the repressions exercised in the rearguard of the two zones.

It is evident that during the Civil War two repressions were essentially perpetrated, depending on the territory was dominated by one or the other side. As far as the repression exercised in the territory faithful to the republican cause is concerned, it erupted with vigor in the bloody summer of the 36th and was reduced notably, without disappearing, six months after the uprising; it is estimated at around 50,000 human beings executed or murdered; and it was the fruit of the own social revolution provoked by the disruption of the State brought about by the uprising of July 1936.
