It is known as Modern Slavery to all those situations that the individual can not escape or reject due to threats, violence, abuse of authority or deception. These include from labor exploitation to forced marriage. According to a study published by the global organization Free Walk Foundation, it was found that in 2018 there are 40.3 million people suffering from this condition and that 89 million people experienced this type of scourge at some point in the last five years. According to their measurements, contained in this year's edition of the Global Slavery Index and using indicators and metrics provided by the International Labor Organization and the International Organization for Migration, the worst-off country is North Korea, where 1 out of every 10 inhabitants suffers from some modern form of slavery. The case of America In the Americas, the statistics speak of an average of 1.9 out of every 1,000 people living in modern slavery, with a forced labor rate of 1.3 per 1,000. The measurements made by the foundation show that the country with the worst indicators in the matter is Venezuela, which has a rate of 5.6 out of every 1,000, for a total of 174 thousand victims. However, this first position is shared with Haiti, whose rate is identical, but the number of victims is lower (because it has a lower demographic) with 59 thousand. On the Colombian side, of the 27 countries analyzed on the continent, it is in the 10th position, with a slavery rate of 2.7 affected per 1,000 inhabitants. The number of victims is 131 thousand people. The index of our country is shared with Barbados and Mexico, although the comparison in terms of the number of victims varies by the difference in size of the three countries, with the first 1,000 and the second 341 thousand affected. Chile and Canada are at the bottom of the ladder, with rates of 0.8 and 0.5 over a thousand people, respectively. The last time the foundation made this same measurement was in 2016 and to carry out this year's report, they included a comparison with the actions taken by the governments of each country to avoid this phenomenon. In this sense, it reports that in Colombia there was no significant change between both years, maintaining a grade B, defined as "average", against the actions taken to eradicate modern slavery.
