Has the passing of time changed something?

Has the passing of time changed something?

It is true that today we have completely different ideologies to those that were based on worshiping and admiring his beloved majesty. However, times have not changed enough for that devotion to disappear. In recent decades there were many who spoke of a third and final republic to end this institution once and for all, however, we continue to see monarchs passing through the Spanish throne without attending to complaints or reproaches.

Throughout history, all kinds of kings have reigned in Spain and have grown all kinds of opinions about them. As the years passed, the king was losing more and more power. Liberals were the first to realize that the concentration of all powers in one hand was not the best thing for a people. So the years passed until today, in which the king has only a merely symbolic and representative role. The Spanish citizens therefore, we should feel identified with the figure of the monarch, but this is not an easy task if it is a person who does not give an example of a decent citizen. The tradition of the monarchy in Spain goes back many years and is a big part of our history. This may be a possible reason for the still current institution, because people have never liked changes.

On the other hand, speaking of the King Emeritus Juan Carlos I, we speak of a king who has begun his reign after a harsh dictatorship. The Spaniards celebrated the death of Franco and the restoration of his new monarch. In addition, Juan Carlos arrived at the throne with an order totally different from the one he implanted, since Franco had named him trusting him to continue on his way, which the king, for one reason or another, refused to do. This may have caused feelings of security and respect for the monarchy. If we add to this the support for the people after the coup d'état of Tejero, we obtain a grateful society to a king who simply did his duty.

But is this figure really necessary? The money we invest in his family does not correspond to the mostly moral tasks with which he gives us. It is rather, an archaic entity more of our country, that has been a step back in the political evolution. The figure of the sovereign is not more than a symbol, for which we pay to have. We must stop to think if there really is a need to have him, when in addition this symbol is no longer a figure to take example.

In short,  time has not changed anything at all.
