A new fiber optic cable promises to increase the speed of the Internet 100 times.

A team of Japanese and Australian researchers have developed an optical fiber capable of transmitting data at a speed of more than 1 petabit per second. So you can get a rough idea of how fast is, a petabit is equivalent to a thousand terabits, which in turn equals one million gigabits, which is the same as a billion megabits. In Spain, a fast connection offers between 500 and 600 megabits per second, so imagine the difference that there is with that achieved by the new optical fiber.

The system has been developed by combining a coupler created by the Macquarie University in Australia, combined with a fiber manufactured by the University of Hokkaido and the equipment manufacturer Fujikura, and a transmission system of the National Institute of Information Technology and Communications of Japan.

This collaboration has resulted in a new fiber of four cores and three modes capable of multiplying by 12 the speed of data transmission, which can be used with existing equipment. In addition, it has the advantage that it is more resistant and less vulnerable to damage because it has a narrower diameter.

"The insatiable global demand for data means that we are approaching a capacity crisis, and we need to find new ways to transport increasing volumes of information," says Dr. Simon Gross of the Macquarie University's Photonic Research Center. "For the first time, we have created a realistic and usable fiber that is rugged and can carry large amounts of data."

According to the team, the use of this fiber would be destined to the data networks, mobile telephony and other types of communication networks, and are also used to interconnect networks with each other through different types of technologies.
