Some prefixes and suffixes are part of our living language, as people use them regularly to create new words for products, concepts or modern situations. For example:
word prefix or suffix new word
biosafety security
disorganizing disorder
multimedia media
email -er email
Email is an example of a word that was formed from a new prefix, e-, which means electronic. This modern prefix has formed an increasing number of other Internet-related words, including e-books, electronic cash, electronic commerce and electronic retail.
All languages contain words that can be used to form statements and sentences. A word consists of a stem or a root, and it can also have affixes. The root is the base word and can be combined with other words to form another word that can have a different meaning.
The words that are added to the root word to modify its meaning are called "suffix" and "prefix". They are called "affixes" and are added before or after the root word. Depending on the root word in which they are added, the prefix and the suffix can acquire different meanings.
The suffix means the time and number of a word. It can also mean to which part of the speech the word belongs. It is added after the word root or root and can provide grammatical information, but it does not change the meaning of the word (inflectional), or it can change the meaning of the word (derived).
For example, the root word "love," which is in the present tense, if the suffix "ed" is added to form the word "beloved," forms the past tense of the word. If the suffix "ly" is added to form the word "charming", it becomes an adjective.
The prefix, on the other hand, is an affix that is added before the word root or root and changes the form and meaning of the word to which it is attached, often giving it the opposite meaning. Take the word "tie" for example. If the prefix "a" is added, the word "untie" is formed that has the opposite meaning of the word "tie."
An affix cannot stand on its own and must be attached to a root word to have meaning. The following are examples of suffixes and prefixes:
Suffix: s, is, ed, est, er, ing, n’t, ism, ile, ion, ity, ist, ive, ment, ous, ure, ize, ary, ant, ate, e y.
