With a total score of 88 points, Mexico took the sixth place out of 53 countries at the VII European Girls Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO), and this has been the highest score of the nation so far. Moreover, the Mexican team took the second place between American countries, just below the United States.
The Mexican Mathematical Olympiad Committee, informed that the Mexican team obtained a gold medal, won by Ana Paula Jiménez; a silver medal, won by Ana Illanes; and two bronze medals, won by Karla Rebeca Mungía and Nathalia Jasso.
The VII EGMO, was supposed to be held in the Netherlands, however, due to the pandemic, it was celebrated virtually from April 15th to April 21st and it consisted of two days of hard examinations. Thus, having in mind the fact that only the ten percent of participants in science competitions are women, I really admire the effort made by the Mexican team, as it was a clear example of the necessary role of women in science, and the proof that Mexico has talented teenagers who believe in education and are passionate about learning.
