PIONNERS OF NANOTECHNOLOGY
Nanotechnology is the manipulation of matter at the atomic, molecular and supramolecular scales. The earliest and most widespread description of nanotechnology1 2 refers to the particular technological goal of precisely manipulating atoms and molecules for the manufacture of macroscale products.
On December 29, 1959, British physicist Richard Feynman gave the lecture entitled, There is a lot of space in the background at a congress of the American Physical Society at the California Institute of Technology; this speech is frequently pointed out as a source of inspiration for the field of nanotechnology. Feynman described a process by which we could develop the ability to manipulate individual atoms and molecules, using precision tools to build and operate another set of tools of smaller proportions, and so on until we reach the nanoscale. In the process of doing so, Feynman observed that problems associated with scaling up physical forces would arise: gravity would become less important and significant, while surface tension forces or Van der Waals forces would take on great importance.
