The Race for the Crown Has Started

On November 16, 32 candidates will compete for the title of Miss Universe Colombia. Although there will not be any audience due to COVID-19, RCN will give a live broadcast so that the entire country can delight with the show. Among some of the favorite participants are Laura Olascuaga representing Bolivar, Bárbara Rodriguez from El Cauca, Valeria Ayos from San Andrés, and Juliana Franco representating El Meta. The final night will be held at El Pabellon de Cristal in Barranquilla, Atlántico.

But remember… Miss Universe is not about looking a certain way nor being the image of what society used to say made a woman beautiful. It is our differences, non-identical faces and bodies, unique personalities and distinctive traits that make a person beautiful. Since 2015, when the enterprise IMG became owner of the Miss Universe contest, the event took a drastic turn. It started choosing delegates who were confident and empowered, focusing on speeches, responses to various questions and the self-assurance each participant had, in order to win the crown. The organization has broken stereotypes and a perfect example is Zozibini Tunzi, the current Miss Universe, being shorter than most of the other contestants, with a dark skin and short-natural hair. When delivering her final speech, Tunzi said, “I grew up in a world where a woman who looks like me, with my kind of skin and my kind of hair was never considered beautiful, and I think that it is time for this to stop. I want children to look at me and I want them to see their faces reflected in mine.” Minutes later she was crowned Miss Universe.
