The coast of southeastern Mexico is raging and remains in emergency after the earthquake of magnitude 8.2 whose death toll rose to 98 and has affected 2.5 million inhabitants of Chiapas and Oaxaca, according to the latest reports from the authorities.
The local government of Oaxaca reported that there are 800,000 people affected in the state. The authorities of Chiapas detailed that in that entity there were affectations in at least 40,000 houses. The quake struck at 11:49 pm Thursday on the country's southern coast and knocked down homes and businesses, as well as panicking more than 1,000 miles away. According to the measurements of the National Seismological Service of Mexico, the tremor had a magnitude of 8.2 and originated in the sea near Pijijiapan, in the state of Chiapas. On Friday night, in honor of those who died, President Enrique Peña Nieto declared three days of national mourning and said that the flags of all public squares of the country should wave at half-mast.
