SPYING AT THE USA EMBASSY IN MOSCOW
A series of microphones were hidden in the US embassy (Washington, 3rd of June 1978)
The US government formally protested that of the Soviet Union yesterday because a series of microphones were hidden in the US embassy in Moscow.
The microphones were found last week in a secret tunnel that existed under one of the wings of that embassy and which apparently connected the chancery with other buildings, the State Department said last night in Washington. An employee of the American embassy who discovered the tunnel and entered it, surprised an individual who was also in the same and fled at the other end.
The official lack of willingness to say more about the matter was apparently due to concerns about the impact it would have on the already tense relations between the two countries.
