The colonial presence is taking several different forms in the Middle East. There are independent countries under British influence. The most complex situation is found in Palestine, where the large Jewish population aspire to create an independent state.
The British government is supporting Jewish claims on territories of Israel, which is under British mandate. Many Jews are immigrating to the region. After the Holocaust, Jews are trying to regroup and move to Palestine, where 600.000 Jews live. A UN resolution is proposing the partition of Palestine into a Jewish state.
The Palestinians and their Muslim neighbours have not recognise the new Israeli state and a group of countries have formed the Arab League. They have declared war on Israel, which is supported by the US.
