Risk Management
Occupational diseases have increasingly come to the attention of employers, who over time have understood the benefits of managing and preventing these risks in a timely manner. In the industrial field, artificial nanomaterials (ENM) are a novel form of production, which is why the information available for risk management is limited, however, and in response to the need to ensure the safety of workers, risk management models related to the industrial production in which MNAs are used have been generated.
With the rise of awareness and acceptance of perceived benefits by employers towards the prevention of occupational diseases in a timely manner, new challenges arise in the industry, managing risks in the face of the introduction of artificial nanomaterials, It is a reality that is growing exponentially without providing for management, control or intervention methods in favour of workers' health.
In the face of uncertainty and ignorance, the measures have been; extreme protection reaching limits such as containment avoiding to the maximum exposure to ENM relying on epidemiological surveillance. In the process of knowing the source of risk metrology and nomenclature were generated (ISO, 2012) giving rise to models such as the Nano Risk Framework which is aimed at the chemical industry as a response to the continuous arrival of new nanomaterials.
The Special Guide for Specific Nanomaterials issued by the Institute for Safety and Health at Work of the Social Accident Insurance of Germany is currently in force, in addition to relevant information that serves as a basis for advancing risk management programs in more focused MNAs, in addition to the support provided through the research carried out in different and recognized universities on the subject.
