The number of deaths for the first time exceeded that of births registered in the entire Southeast region of Brazil, in the first week of April, according to data published this Thursday, April 8, 2021 by Arpen. The states of Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais and Espíritu Santo, with a population of almost 90 million inhabitants, recorded 13,998 births, compared to 15,967 deaths. The region has been presenting a high trend in the number of deaths compared to the births of last year. Throughout Brazil, the first week of April had 32,177 people born and 31,506 deaths. Despite the fact that the country registers fewer and fewer families, the population continues to grow in recent decades, although a registrar passed a decreasing number of new births and a growth in deaths. Experts point out that the covid-19 pandemic could accelerate the phenomenon.
According to Arpen statistics, last month was the one that registered the smallest difference between births and deaths in recent years, a reflection of the strong acceleration of the coronavirus in the Latin American giant, which had its deadliest month in March (66,573 deaths) since the confirmation of the first case of the disease in the country, on February 26, 2020.
