Since Donald Trump took office as president of the United States, several actors in the fashion industry began to express their discontent, mainly because of the president's policies against immigration.
In 2017, the W Magazine published the ‘I am an immigrant’ (‘I Am an Immigrant’) campaign, in which 81 personalities from the sector, including designer Diane von Fürstenberg; Vogue's creative director, Grace Coddington, and model Adriana Lima, joined her voice in a video to say in a solidarity message: "I am an immigrant."
From then on, brands and designers continued to express themselves against xenophobia, racism and began to show their support for immigrant rights through collections, social media campaigns and even canceling their participation in important events.
Other industry greats have done the same on catwalks. For his fall / winter 2017 collection, designer Prabal Gurung, who was born in Singapore, was raised in Nepal and India and lives in New York, presented black and white shirts that said ‘I am an immigrant’ and ‘Tear down walls’. A portion of the proceeds from the sales were donated to the United States Civil Liberties Union and to a foundation in Nepal.
